Learning guitar online works, but there are two very different ways to go about it.

The first involves braving it alone among thousands of free online videos. This is definitely cost effective, and there are some good teachers out there. However, without a guide you will waste a lot of time sifting through materials trying to figure out where to start and you also might get lead astray by some bad teaching. Bad habits take a long time to undo.

The second option is to invest in a course that is structured, taught by a reputable instructor, and has a community of guitarists to keep you motivated along the way. This involves a financial investment, but it will save you a lot of time. On top of that, you will be more likely to become the guitarist you want to be.
